In the fifteenth century, Philip the Good maintains one of Europe’s most magnificent courts. A duke without a crown, he rules over vast lands stretching from Dijon to Bruges, making his itinerant court both a stage for his ambitions and one of the foremost artistic centres of his age. From the grand festivities of the Order of the Golden Fleece to the duke’s private entertainments, Into the Winds paints a portrait in sound of this little-known ruler through the works of Gilles Binchois, Guillaume Dufay and their contemporaries.

The hypnotic melodies of the motets that filled the first cathedrals mingle with troubadour songs calling for the liberation of besieged Jerusalem. On the tournament field, heralds announce the knights to the sound of shawms and trumpets, while within the palace walls recorders hum subtle polyphonies inspired by the popular songs of the day. And the naves of the cathedrals resound with luminous harmonies, evoking a celestial peace that has yet to reach the kingdom of men.
